Final Bill page Standings

(November 22, 2011)

Bill Page Final Standings 2011

The Brighton 10k was the final SGP event of the year and the last chance for Harriers to improve their standings on the leader board. The fast course resulted in eight of the 18 Harriers scoring over 70.

In the ladies’ section Penny Rea, who had been lying second to Marion Hemsworth. was unable to run due to illness leaving Marion is the enviable position of not needing to trouble the starter. She did, though, posting an impressive 74.89, the fourth highest score of the day.

The men’s section went down to the wire. Russ Mullen started the day just 0.11 points ahead of Mike Scholes and with a score marginally below 80 increased his lead to 0.48. However, had Mike shaved just 15 seconds off his time then he would have pipped Russ for first place. It was that close!

Carl Bicknell finally broke through the 70% barrier with an impressive 71.26. Kim Lo also posted her best score of the season at just under 76. Kim only ran one long event – the hilly Bewl 15 – and had she managed a good score in one of the half marathons then she might well have been pressing Marion for top spot.

So, the confirmed Road Racing awards for 2011 are:

10k Road Champions Penny Rea & Russ Mullen

Half Marathon Road Champions Penny Rea & Russ Mullen

Bill Page Road Race Champions Marion Hemsworth & Russ Mullen

This competition puts all Harriers on to a common footing by eliminating differences in age and sex. Times are converted into “scores” which are directly comparable. The conversion is made using the 1994 age/sex factors produced for each distance by the World Masters Athletics (WMA). Chip time (where available) – as opposed to Gun time – is used in order to eliminate differences in distance actually run.

The award is based on a Harrier’s three best scores in SGP events, with the proviso that at least one of them has to be “long” – ten miles or longer.

Following agreement at the 2011 AGM to move to Chip Time for local reporting purposes, there is now consistency between the times.
