Harriers Track & Field Vets take top spot at Sussex Masters League

(July 28, 2021)

Congratulations to Marcus Kimmins and his triumphant group of veteran Track and Field stars who smashed the 7 bells out of the competition at the final League fixture of the Vets League on Tuesday night, thereby taking the Men’s County title this season! Just awesome!

Competing alongside our longtime partners, Lewes Athletics Club there are just too many team members to mention individually so please join me in congratulating everyone that took part.

The ethos of the event, and remember we won it, was typified by young James Smyth who, as a member of the medley relay was coming to the end of his relay leg flying to the handover point. Unfortunately James couldn’t spot the team member he was meant to hand the baton to. All the way down the home straight James waved his baton in the air and shouted for help as he began to wrestle with the possibility of not finding his team mate in time. He got to the handover box without success and waited patiently until his team mate realised and sheepishly took the baton from him.

James described his thought process to me afterwards, "I contemplated running the next leg as well, but I said no I have already done the 100 metres and the long jump and I am really rather tired! These events really are very good fun”
